2021 Lexus RX350 Center Console/Radio Removal (AC Vent Access)

This one started as a warranty fix — a leaked liquid air freshener hardened inside the AC vent and jammed it — but the teardown is the same path you’d use to run wiring for Apple CarPlay or add an amplifier, since it all goes through the same center console.

Remove the trim

1. Pull the side trim pieces. They’re held on by clips only — angle them out and they release. Go slow; this is where it’s easiest to pinch a finger on a stubborn clip.
2. Behind the trim is the starter switch. Unplug its connector — there’s a small release clip on the connector itself that needs to be pushed in before it’ll come free.

Get the two bolts out

1. Both mounting bolts are 10mm, in a tight, awkward spot — a magnetic retrieval tool is worth having on hand in case one drops.
2. Once both bolts are out, the whole console/radio assembly is only held in by clips along the bottom edge.

Pull the assembly and access the vent

1. Lift the assembly out from the bottom, working the retaining clips loose as you go.
2. Take a picture of the wiring before you disconnect anything — there are several connectors (the creator noted at least four separate wire colors) and you’ll want the reference to plug everything back in the right place.
3. Once it’s out, the vent register sits inside the main vent housing.

Pro tip: A magnifying head lamp make this section much easier — several of the clips have to be released by feel in a spot you can’t get a full view of otherwise.

Reinstall

1. Seat the new vent register into its housing and confirm the damper flap opens and closes freely before closing anything back up.
2. Reconnect the wiring using your reference photos.
3. Reinstall the two 10mm bolts — snug them to about finger-tight plus a bit, not fully torqued down.
4. Clean up any residue from the leak with interior wipes before closing the trim back up.
5. Confirm everything still works: clock resets and holds, climate controls respond, and you feel airflow from both vents.
