You won’t always notice a burned-out tail light from the driver’s seat — often the first time you find out is when a police officer points it out. The fix on a 2010 Lexus RX350 is genuinely quick and cheap: the LED replacement bulbs run about $11 for the set, and once you know the trick you don’t even need to pull the housing apart.
Replacing the running light bulb
- Find the dead bulb. Turn the running lights on and walk around the car — you’ll spot the burned-out one.
- Open up access (optional). There’s a small cover/plate behind the housing. You can remove it to make the bulb easier to reach, but it isn’t strictly necessary.
- Release the bulb holder. Reach the holder, twist it about a quarter turn — you’ll feel it let go — and pull it out.
- Swap the bulb. The old incandescent bulb pops off the holder. Press the new LED bulb in. The LEDs are the same size as stock and light up noticeably brighter.
- Reinstall. Put the holder back into the hole, line it up, and twist a quarter turn until it seats. Confirm it’s locked in all the way.
The other side — by feel, no disassembly
The opposite side has less room and a one-piece cover, so taking it apart is a pain. The creator skips it entirely:
- Reach up behind the housing by feel. You can find the bulb holder without seeing it.
- Untwist and pull the holder out the same quarter-turn way.
- Swap the bulb. This one is a press-on type — pinch the old one off and press the new LED on (it takes a little force, but once it’s in, it’s in). Heads up: the bulb may still be hot if the lights were on.
- Twist the holder back in until you feel it lock — about a quarter turn.
Pro tip: the easier way is to do it entirely by feel, reaching up through the back instead of removing the screws and cover. You can’t see the bulb, but you can feel the twist-lock and seat it without taking anything apart.
That’s it
Two LED bulbs, a few minutes, no real tools, and about eleven dollars. Both sides now glow brighter than the originals and should outlast the incandescent bulbs by years — and you’ve dodged that “burned-out tail light” traffic stop.
FAQ
Do I have to take the whole tail light assembly apart?
No. There's an access cover you can pop loose to make it easier, but the creator shows you can reach up behind the housing by feel, twist the bulb holder about a quarter turn to release it, and swap the bulb without removing the screws. The second side he did entirely by feel.
How do the bulbs come out?
Twist the bulb holder about a quarter turn — you'll feel it release — then pull it out. One bulb just pops off the holder; the other is a press-on type that takes a little force to seat. Careful: a recently lit bulb will be hot.
Why bother fixing a running light right away?
A burned-out tail/running light is a classic reason to get pulled over. The creator has been stopped for it before. Walk around your car now and then to catch a dead bulb before a police officer does.
